All of my rugs are made with the concept of combining modern design with traditional methods. My process is done entirely by hand, without the use of chemicals, treatments, or synthetics of any kind. Production of all carpets takes place in Turkey.
The primary materials used are sheep's wool and vegetale (composed of vegetation) dyes native to the region, along with cotton sometimes used for the warp fibers on the loom. Wool is sheared twice a year in a humane manner, on sheep that are used for their wool, not for slaughter. After being hand-spun, the wool is then dyed in small batches of about 40 kilos, by hand. Sun dried wool is prepared for the weavers. They then weave and knot each piece by hand. After, finished pieces are washed and stretched. This is to ensure that all excess dyes are removed, and that the carpets are pre-shrunk. They require no special care, as they can be completely saturated with water without any damage.
I work with about 100 weavers. For our standard sizes, the women weave on looms located in their homes. Larger sizes are made on bigger looms within the village. I am in Turkey communicating new designs and observing production 4-5 times a year. The weaving process alone takes 2-3 months and our capacity is limited to about 160 pieces a year. The methods that we employ date back many centuries.
The majority of my collection is pile weave @ 60 knots/square inch. I also have a few flat weave (kilim) designs available. All pieces are made to order. Minimum lead-time is 3 months. Existing designs can be modified in shape and color. The average order placed takes 4-5 months. Terms for custom work are 50% upon placing an order with the balance due on delivery.
Part of the charm of my carpets is that each one is a specialized and unique product, a one of a kind. Our production is limited so that each piece is given the attention and time it needs. Three central ideas most important to me and to my company are original design, social responsibility (sustainability/labor standards), and adhering to the highest quality standards. Hundreds of years of tradition come together to merge these ideals as one.
